Gemini's strengths are specific — live search and Google Workspace — and so are the reasons people look elsewhere. Usually it is the writing.

Why people leave Gemini

For live search with citations → Perplexity. Closer to what people actually want from Gemini's research use: every answer with clickable sources. Worse for open-ended conversation.
For cost → DeepSeek. Near-frontier reasoning, far cheaper, open weights.
What you give up by leaving
Live web access as a default. This is Gemini's genuine advantage, and it is larger than people expect. A model without it does not know that it is out of date — it will answer a question about last month with the same confidence it uses for arithmetic.
Your own documents. Native reach into Gmail, Docs and Drive is not something another assistant can replicate by being smarter. If your work lives there, this is decisive.
The most generous free tier. Google is defending a search business rather than selling subscriptions, and the free allowance reflects that.
