I cancelled but I was still charged

Cancelling stops your subscription from renewing into the next period — it doesn't reverse the period you're currently in, which has already been invoiced. So if you cancelled mid-period, you keep access until that period ends and you won't be charged again afterward. Settings → Invoices shows exactly what's been billed and when.
