AI is better at editing writing than producing it, and organising your workflow around that fact is the difference between output you publish and output you throw away.
The single most useful reframe
Stop asking it to write. Ask it to react.
A model given a blank brief produces the average of everything it has seen — which is exactly the generic register people complain about. A model given your draft has something specific to work with, and its suggestions become concrete.
The practical version: write badly and fast, then improve it with help. That is faster than trying to prompt your way to a good first draft, and the result sounds like you because it started as you.
Where it genuinely helps
Tightening. "Cut this by a third without losing the three specifics. Keep the opening line." Reliable, fast, and it almost always improves the piece.
Finding the weak part. "What's the weakest paragraph and why? Be specific." Better than most human feedback because it is immediate and does not soften.
Changing register. "Rewrite for someone non-technical. Same facts, shorter sentences, no jargon."

Removing the AI signature
Even good AI-assisted writing has tells. The recognisable ones:

- "In today's landscape", "it's not just X, it's Y"
- Em-dash asides in every paragraph
- A closing that restates the opening
- Uniform sentence length
- Hedging where a person would commit
Two fixes do most of the work: ban them explicitly in the prompt, and read the result aloud. Anything you would not say out loud, cut.
The third fix is structural: write the first and last sentences yourself. They carry most of the voice, and the middle matters less than you think.
